How To Make Perfect Pie Crust

A pie is only as good as its crust. That is why we thought it imperative to write a post about how to make the perfect pie crust, especially with the season of pie fast approaching.

Ingredients

3 cups of flour

1 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups butter flavored shortening

6-7 tablespoons of ice water

Directions

In a large mixing bowl start by sifting the flour and salt together. Cut in your soft, butter-flavored shortening with a pastry cutter. Mix until pea sized lumps start to form out of the dough.

It’s important to remember that shortening makes for better pie crust because it’s very easy to work with and produces crust that is extremely tender. However, shortening lacks the flavor that butter has, so using butter flavored shortening is crucial to creating the perfect pie crust.

A very important aspect of making perfect pie crust is the ice water. Add the ice water and form a little puddle in the middle, start mixing.

The key to flaky crust is to not overwork your shortening and keeping it cold. That’s why we use ice water and stay away from using your hands with the dough since our bodies give off a lot of heat.

You are now ready to roll it out on a lightly floured surface and put into your pie tin to fill with your favorite flavors and pie fillings.
