Turkey Talk: Choosing a Turkey

It’s that time of year to choose a turkey. But how do you know how to choose a good one? We are here to help with a few tips on choosing a turkey thats right for you.

When selecting your turkey, allow for 1 pound of turkey per person for fresh or frozen turkey or 1-1/4 pound per person for a frozen, pre-stuffed turkey.

A few tips on choosing a turkey:

  • Frozen: Make sure you have adequate space in your freezer. Turkeys take up a lot of room.
  • Fresh: Purchase it 1-2 days before cooking. Refrigerate on a tray or in a pan to catch any juices that may leak.
  • Frozen & Pre-Stuffed: Check packaging for the USDA or State mark of inspection, which ensures that it has been processed under controlled conditions. Follow package directions carefully for storage and cooking. DO NOT THAW before cooking. Cook from the frozen state.
  • SAFETY TIP: Do not by a fresh, pre-stuffed turkey, as bacteria spreads easilly from the bird to the stuffing.
