How to Pronounce Gygi

This may come as a surprise to you, but one of our most frequently asked questions is how to pronounce the name of our store.  So, I thought we ought to dedicate an entire post to how to pronounce Gygi.

Though most of you know us as Gygi’s, the full name of our company is the Orson H. Gygi Company. We also get called Orson Gygi’s.

So, how do you pronounce Gygi?

It goes like this: GEE-GEE (The “G” on both “GEE”s makes the hard “G” sound like in garlic and gravy).

The most common mistake people make is that they say the letter “G” twice (like “JEE-JEE”). No “J” sound is made.

A helpful hint: We are a kitchen store, so think of kitchen supplies that start with the letter “G” like:  glass, grinder, grill, and grater. That’s the same “G” sound in Gygi.

Now that you know how to pronounce it… go for it! Say it: Orson Gygi

Then say it again!

Now that you have it… Congratulations! You can now pronounce Gygi!

I do believe we are distant cousins! I am from the family line of John Giggy (originally spelled Gygi) of Bern Switzerland, who came over with his mother and father and later fought in the civil war with his younger brother Benjamin. They then both settled in Kansas where I now live. In fact I have the family crest tattooed on my leg and my mother changed her last name to Büttel-Giggy in honor of her grandfather Alvin Büttel and Hazel Giggy.

Oh my gosh thank you for that explanation. My name is John Giggy I’m a descendant from the Gygi family of Canton Bern. This whole time I was promoting Gygi the wrong way. Thank you
