Let’s be real. The world of decorating can seem

Let’s be real. The world of decorating can seem like a pretty intimidating place. Sure we are just talking about cake and icing, but there really is so much more to it. Building confidence in yourself is what it is all about. 💕

We constantly see smooth cake edges and beautiful bakes in patisserie windows, which can feel pretty overwhelming. How do we shut out our inner critic so that we can create beautiful things without the feeling of judgment? There is no way you can compare your first cake to someone’s 100th cake. The key to this is knowledge, patience (this is a tough one sometimes... just breathe), and practice. We are not professionals, but we practice our craft and become more confident each and every day.

We are here for YOU! Everything we do is to provide you with the knowledge you need. Our info about piping bags, tips, and techniques is meant to help you celebrate those special moments. It doesn’t matter if you are making a cake for your daughter’s first birthday or decorating cookies for your first paid client; We believe in you and are here for you.

And don’t worry, we save all of our info to highlights, so make sure you refer back to them. Remember, We are always a message away. Don’t forget to send us pictures and videos of your bakes so we can celebrate your small (or big) successes.

We believe kitchen tools should have multiple uses…. Okay, there are a few things that have one job… BUT in general, we like things to help us in as many ways as possible.

This doesn’t stop with our decorating tools! Did you know Wilton and Ateco make almost 100 different tips between them? Do you need every single one of those? Piping tips can be used in so many different ways, and we want to show you how to make the most of the ones you have. If you have every single tip available, great! You are set for any decorating project that might be coming your way. But for the beginner decorator or someone wanting to refresh their set, which ones do YOU need to get the most variety of designs and styles without having to buy so many different tips?

We have compiled a list of our favorite tips and are eager to show you how versatile they can be! Check out our stories to see our must-have tips and the different styles and designs you can make with them. Do you have a favorite piping tip? Which tip is your GO TO in the kitchen?

The piping bag is an ESSENTIAL part of any Decorator’s toolbox. Lives have been changed by making the switch to a proper piping bag. ⁠
⁠
There are many different styles out there so we of course have to discuss the many different versions. We are here to convince you how important the piping bag is!⁠
⁠
#1 - TIPLESS: The tipless bag is made to be used as the name says, without a piping tip! This is one of the most basic bags and was mainly created for cookie decorators. These bags are made without a seam so you can get a thin stream of icing for intricate designs. The bag is a little bit thinner than a standard disposable bag, so take that into consideration when deciding which icing to use in there! ⁠

#2 - DISPOSABLE: A thicker style bag that makes cleaning up after a decorating project a breeze, these bags are the standard among piping bags. They are super versatile and clear, so you can see exactly what you are working with! These tend to be a little bit thicker, so despite the name, they can be washed and used multiple times before tossing them!⁠

#3 - FEATHERWEIGHT: This is one of the original styles of piping bag. The bags are made of polyester and the more they are used, the softer they get and the easier they are to work with. ⁠

#4: CANVAS: One of the most traditional types of bag, you will find these in many of the classic bakeries. They are a canvas bag with a plastic coated lining inside. Although they are coated on the inside, we find greasy ingredients tend to seep through the material. We love the fact that this bad can absorb the heat from your hand, so if you have a tendency to melt buttercream with your hot hands, this is the bag for you. ⁠

#5: SILICONE: The feel of the disposable bag with the reusable quality of the canvas bag. The silicone bag is quite flexible and helps retain some heat from hot hands or warm mixtures. ⁠

Paint is to Artist as Frosting is to Baker! When we are talking about decorating, we can’t skip out on the frosting talk. This turns your design ideas into reality. ⁠

The topic of buttercream has many different facets to it! Are you the type of person who asks for the edge piece of cake covered with decorations and borders to maximize your consumption? Or are typical frostings just too sweet for you, the people we call “cupcake scrapers”? Whatever your frosting journey is, there may be a version of your perfect buttercream out there that you haven’t discovered just yet! Let’s break down some of our favorite styles of frosting (from L to R):⁠

French Buttercream: French buttercream is made with egg yolks instead of egg whites! The yolks are whipped up until they are thick, and then, like Italian meringue, a sugar syrup is added, cooking the yolks. We then whip in more butter, and voila, a new style of buttercream! This style is quite loose and is intended to be used as a cake filling, but it is SO delicious. ⁠

Italian Meringue Buttercream: Italian buttercream for short, this frosting is similar to the Swiss process. Sugar syrup is made on the stove and then streamed into whipped egg whites, which cooks the eggs and creates a very stable meringue! ⁠

Royal Icing: Made using only three ingredients, royal icing is great for outlining and flooding sugar cookies, decorating gingerbread houses, adding icing flowers to treats, and other intricate designs. ⁠

American Buttercream: The standard buttercream we see in the US, made with butter and powdered sugar! ⁠
⁠
Swiss-Meringue Buttercream: The first of our meringue-based frostings, this starts off with egg whites! The eggs and sugar are cooked on the stove before being whipped to stiff peaks and then adding buttercream.⁠

German Buttercream: German buttercream is a custard-style buttercream. When making this, you start off with a pastry cream base. This is then chilled and mixed into softened butter, creating a very rich and thick buttercream! ⁠
