The Orson Gygi team wants to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!
Just as a reminder for our holiday hours, Orson Gygi will be closed from December 25th – January 1st. We will reopen at our regular time, 9am, on January 2nd.
The most memorable Christmas tradition in my family is waking up early to open presents in order to make it to my great grandfathers in time for breakfast. Although the mornings were early and the drive was long, we never missed a year. Pulling up to his humble home, sitting on his quaint farm, you could smell the bacon wafting from the house while standing on the driveway. The best part of the morning was walking through his squeaky side door, in which you would see the same sight year-after-year : grandpa standing in the kitchen, with his red apron, wearing a smile and flipping French toast. Great grandpa started this tradition well before I was born. My father remembers grandpa cooking Christmas breakfast when he was only a teenager, as seen in the picture above. I always assumed it had been great grandpa that had trained my father on how to make the perfect French toast.
German pancakes, traditionally derived from the German word, Pfannkuchen, have become a household dish for many. The slightly sweetened puff, that falls shortly after being removed from the oven, is simple to make and can cater to many pallets because it can be topped with nearly any topping of your choice. It was traditionally served with vanilla and cinnamon, however many enjoy fruit, syrups, or whipped topping on their German pancake.
My family always served them with lemon wedges and powdered sugar. Sometimes we’d fill it with leftover apple pie filling and whipped cream. Either way, they were always warm and delicious. It’s hard to go wrong with German pancakes. Try this German pancake recipe for a delectable breakfast to serve during the holidays.
Orson Gygi’s store will close at noon on Christmas Eve, 12/24, and will remain closed until 1/2. For any questions on our holiday hours please check our website at gygi.com.
Online orders will be fulfilled, however, we ask for patience on slightly slower fulfillment times, as we give our great employees time off to spend with their families.
When talking about a Christmas tradition the main one in our house is Christmas Eve fondue. It started when my parents moved away from family and needed to start a family tradition of their own. They came up with the brilliant idea of having a nice meat fondue dinner with their kids. As we’ve grown we have added chocolate and cheese fondues to mix things up. Here a few of the recipes we have used.
One of my most favorite Christmas traditions started out in my childhood neighborhood. There was a sweet lady named Marlene who had been diagnosed with cancer and was given only a few months to live. One of her most favorite things at Christmas time were luminaries. For this particular year, she had purchased bags and candles and asked all of her neighbors on her street to help line the streets with luminaries, which they all agreed to do so. On Christmas Eve that year, she was able to see her whole street glowing with these beautiful candles throughout the night.
Traditions are a big part of the holiday season. We all have those special, or sometimes odd, traditions that remind us of memories of our childhood or put us in the holiday spirit. That’s why, from now until Christmas, we’ll be sharing different holiday traditions from various team members at Gygi, as a way to spread a little holiday cheer.
Our first tradition comes from our Social Media Manager, Rebecca.
